Easter Past and Present

A Virus Stopped The World

Holidays have been a challenge since my children were about four and seven. They can’t help it due to their disabilities. There have been years when we skipped celebrating several holidays.  Easter has been the hardest. None of our difficult Easters will ever come close to the what world as a whole has become in 2020. Looking through our photos of our past attempts at this holiday made me appreciate that we had the choice to celebrate or not. Easters past and present now take on a whole new meaning.

No matter how hard I have worked to stick to our routine as closely as possible before and during a holiday, the anticipation sent my children into tailspins. By the time the holiday arrived, they could not cope, and the meltdowns were epic. I love holidays but the need to adjust to what worked for Mac and Miss Bee was a letdown. Eventually, I realized that my sanity and peace in our home was more important than holiday traditions. Most of the decorations I collected over the years rarely saw the light of day. I displayed just a few to avoid keepsake breakage and visual sensory overload.

Easter Past

As I searched through my thousands of photos, I realized that there were only a few Easter photos. Their absence reminded me of how many we skipped. Given how scary the world has become in such a short time, the images I do have, are priceless.

Easter Present

This year we can’t visit family or have friends visit us. Now that my children are older, I had planned to try celebrating Easter in our new home. The virus had other plans. Our Easter dinner will be whatever we have on hand, nontraditional, and just the three of us once Mac returns from work.

I located the boxes of our Easter decorations, threw caution to the wind and filled our home with bunny cheer. This little act brightened our small piece of the world. It was fun to unpack cute stuff I forgot I had.

Inspired to Learn

Decorating inspired me to play with my Nikon and iPhone cameras. Our St. Augustine home has lots of natural light. As our world shrunk, online learning has been my escape. Masterclasses, increasing my blogging knowledge and practicing photography are my favorites along with binge-watching Netflix and Amazon Prime. Cute bunnies and chicks decorations make good photography subjects.
